Does buying followers work?
It depends entirely on what you want it to do. For first impressions, often yes. For reach, sales or brand deals, no, and sometimes it works against you.

What buying followers changes
One number: the follower count on your profile. That number has a real effect on how people judge an account at a glance. It’s the same reason a restaurant with a queue looks better than an empty one. A visitor seeing 2,300 followers assumes there’s something worth following; a visitor seeing 46 wonders if the account is still active.
What it doesn’t change
- Reach. Neither Instagram nor TikTok shows your posts to more people because your follower number is bigger. They show posts based on how people react to them, and bought followers don’t react.
- Sales. Bought followers don’t buy anything.
- Engagement. Likes and comments stay where they were, so your engagement rate falls.
The engagement rate trade-off
Engagement rate is interactions divided by followers. Say you have 800 followers and your posts average 40 likes and 4 comments: that’s 5.5%, which is healthy. Add 1,000 bought followers and the same posts now score 44 ÷ 1,800 = 2.4%. Nothing about your content changed, but the account looks less engaging to anyone who checks. You can model your own numbers in the engagement calculator.
For most people this doesn’t matter. For anyone hoping to work with brands, it does: agencies and influencer platforms check engagement rate and audience quality as standard.
When it’s worth it
- A new business page that would otherwise look abandoned while you build it up.
- A profile a little short of a round-number milestone it’s worth crossing.
- A side project where you want the first visitors to take it seriously.
When it isn’t
- When you need engagement, reach or sales.
- When you plan to pitch to brands on the strength of your audience.
- When the order would multiply your following many times over.
- When you’d use the number in advertising as proof of popularity.
Getting the most from a package
If you decide to buy, buy modestly, post while it delivers, and keep the numbers in proportion. A few likes on your best posts can stop the engagement gap looking stark. Then do the organic work that actually builds an audience: our guides to Instagram and TikTok growth are free and practical.
